No point in lying. She\u2019d been made, and now she\u2019d find out what the consequences were. It wasn\u2019t like there was anywhere for her to run.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYour real identity is something that I\u2019ve only just verified, but I\u2019ve known that you weren\u2019t actually a 20-year-old woman named Marianne Tepper since shortly after we left the Tangiers System.\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> didn\u2019t sound at all hostile or accusing, but the AIs always sounded pleasant, even when they were handling crises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">And she, undoubtedly, posed a crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cNow we discuss your return to Deckard\u2019s World and the measures that need to be taken to make sure that your trail remains broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWait\u2026\u201d That wasn\u2019t what she had expected him to say at all. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cOnce I had enough information about your behavior on board the ship to determine that you posed no active threat, I sent out a query about your identity to the Federacy, as is standard procedure. That was five beacons back. I received instructions when we made our latest data exchange. All signed by General Ayomide Toal. Do you know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYeah.\u201d She sighed. \u201cI\u2019ve met him several times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She wondered how disappointed he was with her by now. She\u2019d set off a disaster <i>and<\/i> hadn\u2019t been able to hide under an alias long enough to get home\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYour well-being appears to be a high priority for him,\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> continued, startling her. \u201cI\u2019ve been instructed not to discuss your \u2018case\u2019 with anyone but him, and it\u2019s been classified at the highest level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhat is my \u2018case,\u2019 exactly?\u201d How was the General explaining all of this?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou\u2019re a material witness to a series of high crimes, connected to a corporation that may have compromised high level members of the Federacy government itself. You\u2019re also an un-Quantified esper, but Quantification would lead to you becoming compromised as well. It\u2019s paramount that your identity, location, and abilities remain concealed from everyone until the information you possess can be used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">That\u2026 was startlingly accurate. She\u2019d never really thought of it that way before, but then she\u2019d been down in the \u201ctrenches\u201d the whole time. From there, even when her head had been swollen with all the tricks she\u2019d \u201cmastered,\u201d she\u2019d felt like a little bug dodging the feet of a giant. Stealing the contents of the <i>apeirochorons<\/i>, \u201cheisting\u201d the bodies from the morgue, even pushing the <i>Scarlet Matador<\/i> and its stubborn box out of U1, had felt like a desperate, possibly last, bug bite to the giant\u2019s ankle at best. The specter of Tomlin\u2019s murder, and the hundreds who had been killed to get to him, had haunted her every step\u2026 when she hadn\u2019t been coasting on a childish sense of invincibility, anyway\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYeah,\u201d she sighed again, feeling heavier than ever. \u201cThat about covers it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou have also,\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> continued, \u201cestablished First Contact with two different sentient alien species, neither of which are classified as direct threats but both of which are to be approached with caution. I\u2019ll want to know a great deal more about <i>that.<\/i> The General indicates that you\u2019re in continuous telepathic contact with one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThe <i>Apeiros<\/i> and the Ree,\u201d she told him. \u201cContact with them happened because I have Threshold Syndrome. Did he tell you about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYes. I was waiting to see if you\u2019d volunteer that information yourself. We need to work on how forthcoming you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhat was the point of hiding it?\u201d she asked, her throat tightening. \u201cYou know everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAudrey MacNamera, if you are to successfully stay hidden from the people who would use or kill you, you must learn to <i>never<\/i> volunteer <i>any<\/i> new information, no matter what your captors or interrogators appear to already know.\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt>\u2019s voice had turned stern. His next words were gentler. \u201cThis is something we\u2019ll work on over the next few months. I <i>am<\/i> sorry. A child your age shouldn\u2019t have to deal with such issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhat should a\u2026 child\u2026\u201d It galled her that, after everything, that was still where she fell. \u201c\u2026my age be dealing with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cSchooling, and the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of puberty, in preparation for the complexities of adult human civilian life.\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> seemed very certain about that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWas the schooling what tipped you off?\u201d The Geometry, Second-Year Algebra, Biosphere Science, and Introduction to Biology textbooks she\u2019d been working with, and quizzing herself on, were publications intended for middle- and high-schoolers, after all. As was the Civics textbook she\u2019d only just begun reading.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThat, and the fact that you were two inches, and are now <i>three<\/i> inches, taller than an ID card created less than three months ago listed you as\u2026 and your database queries for the nutritional needs of early-adolescent girls on growth spurts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI thought I <i>deleted<\/i> those queries.\u201d Audrey gasped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou did. I\u2019ve been keeping backups of all your actions. You have high-level access that I found particularly concerning. It makes sense now that I know you\u2019re the daughter of the man who created our security systems, especially given your perfect recall of everything you observe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI swear, I haven\u2019t shared around how to do any of it\u2026\u201d Except, she thought with a pang of guilt, with Kyra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She winced. \u201cI showed Kyra Wittier-Collins how to use the Ghost Codes I created. I don\u2019t know how much she\u2019ll use that information, though. Her recall\u2019s normal and she doesn\u2019t like spending a lot of time on electronics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cOnce again, you need to work on how forthcoming you are. Fortunately, I already knew that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Shit. \u201cI just\u2026 I\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou haven\u2019t had anyone to talk to about any of this, have you? You\u2019ve been on your own and unable to confide in anyone since January 30, 2516. Even when you had companions, even when you had help, you still had to guard yourself. You never told any of them your real name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Audrey nodded, unable to hold the tears back. \u201cHow did\u2026 how did General Toal know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cHe <i>is<\/i> head of the Federacy Military Intelligence Division. I would imagine he\u2019s known for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">And, like <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt>, had kept silent about what he already knew so that he could see how good she was at keeping her own secrets\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he help me go to my father, then?\u201d she heard herself demand, her voice halfway between a plea and a <i>whine.<\/i> \u201cThat\u2019s where I was <i>trying<\/i> to go\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYour father\u2019s on Furya. Do you know what would have happened, the moment you arrived and someone realized you were the child of a soldier who had served there before you were conceived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">General Toal\u2019s words, as they\u2019d worked in her old apartment, floated back to her. <i>\u201cIt\u2019s something about their world itself, it seems.  The powers have even appeared among the children of the relief troops who were stationed at the Caldera Base\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cQuantification,\u201d she breathed. The General had already known exactly who she was when he told her that. \u201cFuck. That\u2019s the real reason why my dad left me on Deckard\u2019s World, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cIf you\u2019d shown any signs of psychic ability before he left, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cMy mom always told me that psychic powers were nonsense, just cheap tricks con artists pulled on anybody they could fool\u2026\u201d She winced, remembering the scolding she\u2019d gotten.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhat brought that on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cShe caught me talking to a woman at a \u2018Gypsy Fortune Teller\u2019 booth at a carnival when I was seven. I was telling the lady that reading minds was <i>easy\u2026<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWas it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Her stomach knotted, just thinking about it. \u201cI\u2026 was just <i>pretending<\/i>\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWere you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She felt sick. \u201cI\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>\u201cIf you keep telling these lies, bad men will come and take you away and hurt you!\u201d<\/i>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAudrey. Calm down, please. I apologize. I didn\u2019t know you were punished for showing any signs of psychic abilities. I won\u2019t pursue that line of questioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Was that what had happened to her? Darkness was swimming at the edge of her vision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cMarianne?\u201d <tt>First-AId<\/tt>\u2019s voice came over the room\u2019s speakers. \u201cI want you to breathe with me, please. All right? Take a deep breath in through your nose. In\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She focused on <tt>First-AId<\/tt>\u2019s words, breathing in slowly through her nose, aware that hot tears were running down her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cNow open your mouth and slowly let your breath back out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">She exhaled, forcing the breath past the hard knot in her chest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAnd in through your nose\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">It took a long time, she was never certain exactly how long, until she calmed down enough to breathe normally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThank you for your help, First-AId. I must disconnect you from the room now for security reasons,\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> said once Audrey had calmed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cMy pleasure, MilitAIre,\u201d the other AI said before the speakers went silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">That verbal exchange, she knew, had been for her benefit. <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> had summoned <tt>First-AId<\/tt> into the room silently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI apologize again,\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> told her. \u201cI was unaware that you had this level of trauma. I will endeavor not to trigger it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>She\u2019d<\/i> been unaware of it, herself. Part of her wanted to poke at it, figure out exactly what had happened\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u2026but even thinking about doing that stirred nausea again. She couldn\u2019t. Not yet. The panic attack Ewan had comforted her through had been <i>nothing<\/i> compared to this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Everything was spiraling\u2014had spiraled\u2014out of control. She wasn\u2019t sure of the way back anymore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to use a neurofeedback device the General gave me,\u201d she said after a few minutes of quiet. \u201cTo disguise my brain waves in case I ever get Quantified. It was getting easier to do, but it suddenly got harder again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cAfter the incident in the recreation room today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Apparently, <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> had only been letting her <i>think<\/i> she was erasing data. Damn. \u201cYeah. Do you know what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI only saw as much as you saw. Do you really have no memory of doing and saying the things you saw in the playback?\u201d He sounded simply curious.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYeah. The <i>Apeiros<\/i> took my memories of both what I did and why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThis is the alien species you made First Contact with, and remain in telepathic contact with?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cIt is, yeah.\u201d She took a deep breath. Since he believed her, since he apparently was <i>on her side,<\/i> she needed to tell him the rest. \u201cUm\u2026 one, maybe more than one, of them was speaking through me on that recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cI surmised as much. How many times have they tampered with your memory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cThree.\u201d <i>That I know of.<\/i> But she was almost 100% certain that there had only been three times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">For a moment she saw it again, a long, slender obsidian arm, tipped with two gleaming claws, reaching out to touch her forehead. <i>One day, you may remember, too\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">And no fear. The arm had been beautiful. There was a sense of an unbearable burden lifting, heartbreaking knowledge falling away, utter relief\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>\u2026stone that wasn\u2019t stone cracking, splintering, shivering into dust and vanishing into nothing\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cWhatever it is they took\u2026\u201d she said carefully, \u201cI think it\u2019s something that would\u2026 have the same effect on me as your questions about the fortune teller had, if they hadn\u2019t taken it away. Maybe an even worse effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou are sure they mean you no harm?\u201d <tt>MilitAIre<\/tt> asked, a hint of concern in his tone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYeah. I am. They\u2019ve tried to protect me, stop me from hurting myself. I trust them\u2026\u201d a yawn escaped before she could stop it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\"><i>I love them\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cYou must be very tired,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll pick this up after you\u2019ve slept. I\u2019ll be commandeering some of your free periods while we work all of this out. I\u2019ll also need a full debriefing of your time on the run, to ensure that we\u2019ve accounted for all variables in your return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">Behind her, she heard the Security Room lock disengage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-indent:1em;margin-bottom: 0\">\u201cRest now. You won\u2019t have to do any of this alone anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Author\u2019s Note:<\/b> This is probably the shortest chapter this story has seen in a long while, but it came to its close quite naturally so I\u2019m not pushing it. I\u2019m also posting it on the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the original posting date of the first chapter, September 5, 2004. I had hoped to have the whole thing written and posted by now, but the story has taken some convoluted turns that needed more space than I anticipated. We\u2019re still a few weeks away from returning to the frame story, and then a few weeks further out from reaching the conclusion (and the start of <i>Song of Many \u2019Verses<\/i>).
